10 Sessions and Events to Attend at the CSUN Conference 2016

The CSUN Conference, San Diego, celebrates its 31st birthday this week, with a packed program of sessions on assisted learning and education technology.

As always, the conference will provide a mine of inspiration on how technology can help people with disabilities reach their full potential in education and beyond. But with dozens of sessions and events scheduled, how will you manage your time most effectively?

To help you plan for CSUN 2016, here are our 10 must-see sessions and events at this year’s conference.


Supporting a University's Transcription and Captioning Needs

For support staff in higher education, providing transcription and captioning services is often time-consuming and expensive. But in this session, Laura Fathauer of The Ohio State University will explain how to simplify the process while maintaining the quality of the support you provide.

Note-taking Technology & Speech Recognition Solutions

Taking notes in fast-moving lectures and meetings has long been problematic for students and professionals with certain disabilities.

But, in the last decade, a range of assistive technologies have been released that enable people with disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD to take effective notes, independently. In this session, assistive tech experts Brian Krause and Thad Selmants talk through what’s available for students and learners of all ages.

Apps to Support Converting Digital and Printed Materials  

For many students with disabilities, text isn’t always best. Which is why this session on how apps can be used to create more accessible teaching materials is one of our conference highlights.

Solving the Note-Taking Problem: A Demonstration of Effective Approaches  

Effective note taking remains one of the cornerstones of academic success. If you can’t capture what you hear in class and summarize that material effectively, you will struggle come exam time.

In this session, you will hear why taking notes is something that every student finds difficult, and why it is particularly tricky for students with certain disabilities. You’ll also discover how assistive technology can break the note-taking process down into manageable stages that almost any student can perform independently.

Making Students with Disabilities Successful in Higher Education

This session analyses 15 years’ of research on the factors that contribute to the success of students with disabilities in postsecondary education. Presented by Bjoern Fisseler, a Research Assistant from the University of Hagen, Germany, you will pick up tips on raising attainment for students with various special needs.

Best Practices and Strategies for Campus-Wide Learning Support

Implementing campus-wide assisted learning technology can be daunting. So head along to this panel discussion for stories from the front-line courtesy of educators who have been there and lived to tell the tale.

But there are now affordable mobile apps for note taking which they can access without standing out from the crowd. In this session, a panel of experts talk through the various applications available for in-class note-taking, across iOS and Android devices.
