Case Study | PhD Student Ups Her Productivity with Sonocent

“I’ll always use Sonocent now. I’ve seen the benefits… as an all-around package, with the app and desktop software, it’s excellent.”

Charmain Brown, Nursing Graduate and PhD Student, University of Greenwich

The Challenge

Charmaine Brown suffers from arthritis in her hands that affects her ability to write and type.

When she began her PhD she knew she’d need to take audio recordings of dozens of interviews, identify common themes and transcribe lengthy passages for her eventual thesis.

Fortunately, she qualified for DSA funding and received access to Sonocent and Dragon software.

A Faster Way to Write up Interviews

When Charmaine received Sonocent, she no longer had to worry about typing up her interviews.

Now, she can capture a complete record of any interview by recording directly into the Sonocent Recorder companion app on her phone or tablet.

As she listens, she uses the audio annotation tools to mark up the parts of the audio that she will want to summarise and transcribe.

Afterwards, she transfers the recording from her mobile device to Sonocent Audio Notetaker on her desktop, where she can use the inbuilt audio clean-up tools to airbrush any background noise from her recording for optimal intelligibility. She listens back to the audio that she highlighted and dictates summaries of the material directly into the software.

Finally, she makes use of the software’s integration with Dragon NaturallySpeaking software to transcribe her dictations directly alongside the audio, before exporting the text into Microsoft Word where she can continue to work on her thesis.

Research Right on Track

Sonocent allowed Charmaine to streamline the way she conducted interviews and worked with that research material, giving her more time to focus on the actual composition of her thesis.

The result? Charmaine is right on track towards achieving her PhD.

In Charmaine’s words, “It’s changed the way I work. I’ve got into a pattern that I am very comfortable with. You get a lot done. Transcription is very time consuming, so I save a lot of time typing”.
